The sun was dappling the trees as we drove up the picturesque driveway of Danesfield House. Had I not been driving, I would have closed my eyes and lost myself in a fantasy of Mr Darcy emerging from the river at the bottom of the grounds.
We were greeted by the friendliest staff I have ever encountered. There was no false customer service, they were genuinely interested in our well-being and their smiles lit up their faces, making us feel completely welcome and at home. It’s very clear that Liz, the spa manager, leads a truly unique team who went above and beyond to cater to our every whim.
While we enjoyed a welcome drink at the bar area (which has a large selection of tea, coffee and other drinks) we booked in lunch and then enjoyed a tour of the facilities. We were rather attracted by the nail bar, it’s the perfect place for girly days out – nails, champagne followed by afternoon tea. 🙂 There is also a private members gym that is fully kitted out with the latest equipment. I “accidentally” left my gym clothes at home, as my wish was to relax and be pampered for the day.
Once we changed into our swimsuits, robes and slippers, we headed to the spa area. We enjoyed a dip in the pool, then a warming eucalyptus steam and sauna.
My sister wanted to enjoy the bubbly Jacuzzi and I planned on lying on a lounger absorbing myself in this month’s edition of Vogue. The pool area has a glass wall and to say that the view from the pool area was mesmerising would be like calling Niagara Falls a trickle of water. 20 minutes ticked away, then 30, and my magazine lay unopened on my lap. We were both transfixed on the miles and miles of beautiful landscape in front of us.
We were enticed away from the view by the prospect of food. We relaxed in our robes while enjoying a lunch of Caesar and goats cheese salad, followed by fruit salad and Eton mess. The Eton mess was the best I had ever tasted and if I hadn’t been in such salubrious surroundings I would have licked the bowl clean!
Our afternoon started with a Beauty Angel session. In their own words, the Beauty Angel uses a “special light penetrates deep into the skin and increases the body’s own production of collagen.” It targets a number of skin and anti-ageing issues and visible results can be seen in just a few sessions. It feels like you are having your skin treated whilst lying on a beach with a cocktail in your hand, soft wind blowing. Wonderful!
Next we were lead to the VIP treatment room, which was a large double room to accommodate us both. We had the Danesfield House Trilogy which is spa’s signature treatment -“A deep cleansing back exfoliation followed by an Aromatherapy Associates back massage bringing powerful de-stressing benefits to mind and body. This all-embracing treatment is then completed with a bespoke, La Vallée Facial.”
Prior to starting the treatment, my therapist discussed in detail what the treatment entailed and asked if I had any concerns. I did! A sore shoulder and tight neck, but within minutes the techniques used during the Aromatherapy Associates massage melted the pain away. The La Vallée facial was nothing short of miraculous. It focused on stimulating the facial muscles using a unique massage method. Afterwards my skin was firmer, hydrated and positively glowing.
Once the 80 minute treatment was over, we made our way to the relaxation room to enjoy some ice cold water and discuss our day so far. My sister was a ‘virgin’ (spa goer that is!), and hearing all about her treatments and experience, made me realise that the bar has been set pretty high for any other spa she might visit. I however, have been round the block when it comes to spas, but I have to admit that my Danesfield House experience is one of the best so far.
With our day drawing to a close we headed to the changing rooms and showers, both of which were stocked with Aromatherapy Associates products. We couldn’t resist popping into the boutique that is stocked with most of the products used at the spa. As we never had a chance to hit the nailbar, I treated myself to a Jessica nail polish – Boho Babes from the autumn collection – it’s gorgeous for both hands and toes! I also bought some Moroccan Oil, as I figured my hair should be just as lovely as my skin and Moroccan oil never fails me!
As we drifted down the long driveway, leaving Danesfield behind, I was reminded of a Jane Austen quote I once read, “Ah! There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” Jane Austen may have finished her most famous novel in the same year that Danesfield House was built, 1797, but I don’t think she could ever have visited. For if she had, I believe her quote would have been, “Ah! There is nothing like visiting Danesfield House for real comfort”
